Today we had our last Language Class

We went through exam review for visual and watched Terra Nova

In the Pepsi Visual there is purpose. Purpose is the reason an author creates a visual. It is usually to persuade, inform or entertain. The purpose of this visual is to get people to buy Pepsi and not Coke.

Bias is a slanted viewpoint. It is used in this visual by making the coke look gross and the stray does not want to go in there. Focal point is where the author wants the viewer to look. The author wants the viewer to look at the two cans and the straws. Balance is used in the visual so that the cans are perfectly placed in the middle so the viewers look there. In conclusion, the author uses bias, balance and focal point to persuade the viewer to drink Pepsi over Coke.

Today in class we continued on with Exam review.

We completed a Connection TDSC on the story Smart Ice Cream.

In the short story smart Ice cream by Peter Jennings I can make a text-to-_self connection. A connection is when you make a link between what you are reading and something you already know about. A text-to-self connection is linking what you are reading and your own life.

A text-to-self connection I can make is when the boy calls people names like “Pimples” or “snozzle”. The main character in the story is very unkind and nasty to his classmates for no apparent reason. He has no remorse and is constantly putting others down to make himself look better. This remind me of a time when I was in school and other students made fun a person because they were really tall and called them sky scraper. I can remember that person being very upset, just like in the story. My classmate also showed no remorse and constantly put others down in an attempt to make themselves look or feel better, just like in the story.

In conclusion, I can make a text-to-self connections to the story Smart Ice Cream by Peter Jennings.

We then began a writers notebook.
What is not finished is for Homework!

Today we continued on with review.

I read the story Smart Ice Cream and everyone completed a practice TDSC on THEME

Theme TDSC – Smart Ice Cream

In the story “Smart Ice Cream” by Paul Jennings there is a strong theme. Theme is the main message or moral that the author is trying to teach the reader. The theme of this story is “you should always be nice and kind to people”.

One example to support this theme is when the main character states what he did when Peppi, the man selling the Ice Cream made the narrator wait in line, “ I took out a nail and made a long scratch on his rotten old van, He had just had it painted”. This is a prime example of the mean, unkind way the main character behaves and supports the theme of how people should be kind and nice to each other.

A second example that supports the theme is when the main character calls people “pimples” and “snozzle” because they have pimples or a big nose. He makes fun others and puts them down. Again the author is highlighting the importance of being kind to people by showing how mean this character is.

The last example that supports the theme of be nice and kind to others is how in the end of the story the main character loses his intellectual gift because of his own unkind actions. He breaks into Peppi’s van to ruin all of his ice cream with sand and eats a tub of “smart Alek ice cream”. This causes him to completely lose his smarts. If he never acted in an unkind way this would never have happened to him.

In conclusion, the main message or theme of the story Smart Ice Cream by Paul Jennings is to always be kind and nice to other people. The main character is an example of this because he scratches the van, makes fun of others and breaks into Peppi’s van. He learned the hard way the consequences of being so unkind.

Today we finished the visual review and went through our terms.

Who is the intended audience for this image?

The intended audience for this visual are people ages 10 and up who like hot/spicy foods. Audience is for whom a piece of text is written. The author wants the reader to “Beware of the Heat” when eating because it is so hot. The image of the fire extinguisher is used to say that the sauce is hot and that you will need to extinguish it. A person who does not like spicy food will not be interested in this image because they have no interest in having food that makes your mouth hot.

What is the purpose of this image? Explain by using 3 terms from your sheet

Purpose is defined as the reason why an author creates a particular piece of writing or visual. The purpose of this image is to be clever, funny and to get the viewer to buy Tabasco sauce.
This bottle is perfectly balanced in the middle of the page so that the viewer is drawn to the image of the hot sauce as a fire extinguisher.
The color is also very important. With everything being red on the page - feelings of heat and warmth are felt because the sauce is exactly that; hot. The focal point of the image is the bottle with a fire extinguisher attached. This funny image is where the author wants the reader to look and get the point that this product is hot.

All of these teens are in desperate need for any of these items:

Toothpaste

Shampoo
Hairbrushes

Baby cream

Today in class we took notes on making inferences and read The Killers Tall Tale.

WHAT ARE INFERENCES?
An inference is a guess that you make based on the information you have and your background knowledge. When you make inferences you increase your understanding by:
-making judgements
-drawing conclusions
-reasoning about a text

Situation- A cake left on the kitchen counter is gone and the dog has icing on his paws.
Inference- The dog ate the cake.

Situation- The car is off the road with a flat tire and there is a large pothole on the road.
Inference- The car hit the pothole and damaged the tire.

We make inferences by combining clues with what we already know, and that our inferences can be confirmed or changed when we get more information.

Some of you may have noticed that your overall grade went up! I went through all of my marks and if you performed better on the unit test than you did on your assignment, then it shows proof of learning so your test represents what you know better than the assignment because it is more recent. So, for example (my favorite one), if you got 54% on your unit 4 assignment and then worked really hard and got 100% on your test, then I changed your assignment mark to 100% !!! If that was you... WELL DONE!!

S.3 The author also states that she wants to “singing, sing the rain.” This also adds to the happy mood of the poem as singing is an activity people do when they are happy and enjoying themselves.

Today we read, 'The Toaster' and completed a TDSC on Metaphor

In the poem “The Toaster” by R.A. Doke there is a metaphor. A metaphor is the comparison of two unlike things without using “like” or “as”. A quote from the poem is, “A silver-scaled dragon with jaws flaming red / Sits at my elbow and toasts my bread.” The two things being compared are a toaster and a dragon. These two are alike because a dragon and toaster could both be silver in colour, as well they could both heat something to the point of burning. This metaphor contributes to the poem because it allows the reader to picture the red hot glow coming from a toaster like the flames from a dragon, creating visual imagery. In conclusion, the poem “The Toaster” contains an example of imagery.

Today we worked on a Simile TDSC

In the Poem, The Blind Men and the Elephant by John G Saxe there is the use of simile. A simile is a comparison between two unlike things using the words like or as.

“The Elephant is very like a wall” is the first example of a simile. The two things being compared are an elephants’ side and a wall. These two things are alike because they a both sturdy and big. This simile helps paint the picture that the elephant is big and sturdy.

“Elephants’ knee is very like a tree” is another example of a simile. The two things being compared are an elephants’ knee and a tree. These two things are alike because they are both tall, sturdy and rough. This is effective because it paints a picture that the elephant’s knee is like a tree.

“An elephant is very like a fan” is the last example of a simile. The two things being compared is an Elephant’s ear and a fan. These two things are alike because they are both very big, flat and thin. This is effective because the reader can picture the ear like a big fan.

In conclusion, there are effective uses of similes in the poem, The Blind Men and the Elephant.

Today we recapped all the terms for the test and then the class worked on a TDSC.

In TDSC format, make a connection to the story, Principals and Principles by Daniel Handler.

In the story, “Principals and Principles” by Daniel Handler, I can make a text-to-self connection. A text-to-self connection is when the reader can link what they are reading to their own lives.

When I was in grade seven I was not allowed to ride my bike to school, but the grade 8’s could. This was not fair and I had to do something about it. I got all the students in grade seven to take their bikes to school as a way to protest the unfair rule. The principal was not happy, he got upset with me and all the other grade 7’s because we broke the rule. This is very similar to the main character in the story Principals and Principles because he wore shorts to school because he felt it was unfair that students were not allowed to wear them. He also got everyone to wear summer clothes and protested that his Principal would not allow students to wear certain clothes. He also got into trouble like me.

In conclusion, I can make a text to self-connection to the story Principals and Principles.

Today in class we review developing ideas and sequence text pattern.

We also completed a Character TDSC on Principal and Principles.

In TDSC format, what is a character trait of the narrator in the story, Principals and Principles?

Sample Character Answer: “Principals and Principles”
In the essay “Principals and Principles” by Daniel Handler the narrator has the character trait of being determined. A character trait is a personality quality, it is not an emotion.

Firstly, it is revealed that the narrator is determined when the essay says “Everyone groaned-everyone but me. She can’t do that.” This shows that the narrator is determined because he is going to stand up to the principal.

Secondly, the narrator shows that he is determined when it says that Daniel repeated to the principal that “Students have the right to free dress.” This shows that the narrator is determined because he has the courage to question a person in authority.

Lastly, the narrator shows that he is determined when he says “I forced myself not to cry, biting my lip and blinking very, very fast, until at last she gave up and I was allowed to return to my classmates.” This shows that the narrator is determined because even though he wanted to cry he managed to keep the tears back and not cry in front of the principal.

In conclusion, the narrator is a very determined character. This is shown throughout the story.

Everyone then took some notes on Sequence Text Pattern.

Sequence Text Pattern

A selection using sequence text pattern may have information listed in order of importance OR in the order that things happened.

Using sequence text pattern helps because:

- It's easier to write and read about things that happened if they are in the order in which they happened.

- Using them gives a beginning, middle and end to a selection.

- It allows the reader to make predictions as they are reading and check ahead to see if they were right.

Today''s class centered around completing a TDSC on theme.

(T)In the story The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan there is the use of theme. (D) Theme is the main message or lesson the author wants to teach us, it is a universal truth. The Theme of this story is, always be kind to others.

1st Support
This theme is very evident in the opening of the story when the boy plays with the lost thing and is very nice to it. Even though the thing is a stranger, he is still very kind and is concerned about it.

2ND Support
The second example that supports the theme is how much energy and time the boy puts into helping the lost thing. He takes it home, feeds it and makes sure it is cared for. He does not have to do this, but chooses to be kind and helpful.

3rd Support
The final example that supports the theme of always be kind to others is how the main character finds the true home of the lost thing. He could have left it in the government building and walked away. The main character made sure the lost thing got home safe and sound.

In conclusion, the story The Lost Thing supports the theme of always be kind to others.

Today in Language we worked on a character trait TDSC on the nest.

In the short story, “The Nest” by Robert Zacks there is excellent character development. The character Jimmy has the character trait of being determined. A character trait is a quality of a person’s personality, it cannot be an emotion. There are many examples, in the story, to support this character trait. Jimmy shows determination when he was not allowed to go on the hike, Jimmy’s mother told him that Paul was a bad influence, and when Jimmy decided to bring Paul home after the hike.

The first example of Jimmy being determined is when his mother told him he was not allowed to go on the hike and he immediately stood up for himself. A quote to show this is “he was on his feet yelling…in his bursting anguish for freedom”. By standing up for himself he showed that he has the character trait of determination.

Another support for the character being determined is Jimmy’s mother told him that Paul was a bad influence on him, however, Jimmy didn’t agree. A quote for this is when Jimmy states that “he’s nice…he isn’t a thief”. Jimmy shows his determination by standing up to supporting his friend Paul by going on the hike.

A final example to prove that he is a determined character is when Jimmy decides to bring Paul home to prove that he is a nice boy. To quote the story Jimmy said “I’m bringing him home to supper. I said that you asked him”. By being firm with his mother, Jimmy showed his determination to prove that Paul was in fact a great boy.

In conclusion, through standing up for himself, for going on the hike anyway, and for bringing Paul home we can conclude that Jimmy has the character trait of being determined.

Today in Language we reviewed theme and then completed a Theme TDSC as a group.

Sample TDSC THEME Answer for “The Nest”

In the story, “The Nest”, by Robert Zacks there is theme. Theme is the main moral or lesson that the author is trying to teach. The theme in this story is “Growing up involves learning to make your own decisions.”
One example that shows this theme is when Jimmy decides to leave the house and meet his friends at the store against his mother’s wishes. It says in the story, “Jimmy turned and blindly ran off the porch across the lawn toward the meeting place at Briggs’ Drugstore.” Jimmy decided for himself that his mother was being unfair about not letting him go on the hike so he left the house without his mother’s permission.

Another example from the story which demonstrates the theme is when Jimmy meets up with Paul and decides to go on the hike even though all of their friends were not allowed to go. “All these parents had stopped the gang from going with Paul because he was once in reform school.” Jimmy made his own decision to not follow the crowd and go on the hike anyway because he knew that Paul needed a friend badly. Jimmy wanted to be the person that Paul could depend on.

A third example which shows the theme is when Jimmy makes the decision to invite Paul to supper even though he knows that his parents probably would be mad at him for disobeying their orders to not go on the hike. Jimmy says to Paul, “She even said I should bring you to supper afterwards.” Jimmy knew in his heart that Paul needed a good friend and inviting him to his house for supper would mean the world to Paul.
In conclusion, the theme of the story “The Nest” is “growing up involves learning to make your own decisions.”

Throughout the story Jimmy makes his own decisions and goes against his parents’ wishes. In the end Jimmy’s mother admits to him she was wrong and that he had done “the right thing at the right time.”

Here is an example of what we did:

Unit 1: Step Up-
SAMPLE TEXT-TO-SELF ANSWER -

“The Nest” by Robert Zack
The short story “The Nest” by Robert Zack is very easy to make a text-to-self connection with. A connection is a link that the reader makes between what they are reading and things they already know about a topic. A text-to-self connection is when the reader makes a personal connection to the text.

The text-to-self connection I made (place your own support here) to Jimmy’s support of his friend is when I supported my friend Keith Richards. (Explain your connection) All of my friends and I tried out for the band “The Rolling Stones” and we all made it except Keith. When Keith did not make the band, all of our friends turned their backs on him and would not hang out with him anymore except me. I stayed friends with Keith and stayed up all night with him for the summer and helped him learn to play guitar. By the end of the summer we were both much better musicians. The rest of our friends thought it would be a good idea to let Keith join the band. In conclusion, (show how the connection helped you understand the story) I can make a text-to-self connection with the story because Paul and Keith were both treated badly by their friends. I can also connect with Jimmy for staying friends with someone who others didn’t want to be friends with.

I have made a connection between my friendships and the ones in the story.
